The acrimony after severing the alliance culminated into the attack on the Lubiri by Obote soldiers, forcing the Kabaka into exile in 1966.
August 24, 1964, Dr. Milton Obote, then Prime Minister, announced the end of the UPC-KY Political alliance. The alliance between Uganda People's Congress (UPC) and Kabaka Yekka (KY) had been formed just before independence to defeat the Democratic Party in the pre-independence elections.
