Rugby 7s Final

Walukuba Titans 17 Thunderbirds 7

Walukuba Titans won the fourth circuit of the National Women Rugby 7s tournament over the weekend denying Thunderbirds the chance to win the tournament with an unbeaten record.

Peace Wokorach, Grace Auma and Helen Buteme scored a try each for the Jinja based side while Gilder Azikuru added a conversion to seal the 17-7 win in the final played at Legends Rugby Club.

The Jinja side formed last year has grown so fast that in the previous circuit at the Dam Waterz Club in Jinja, they defeated Blank Panthers and Thunderbirds in the group stages.

"It is a great improvement for girls' rugby and I think we are on the right track as women if we can start seeing upcoming teams defeat the traditional teams," Buteme said.

Norah Nabasirye scored Thunderbirds' try and a conversion by 2015 Nile Special USPA female rugby player of the year Samiya Ayikoru who emerged as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

With only the Kyadondo circuit remaining, Thunderbirds with 116 points are 20 ahead of second placed Entebbe Sharks (96) and have successfully defended the title won last year.
