Golfer Otile takes open lead of many firsts

After his two-over-par 74 on day one, Otile promised to improve in subsequent rounds, a promise he has kept.

Ronald Otile (pictured top) remained true to his word, improving his day one scores by five strokes to set himself on course to retaining the Uganda Open title.

The USPA golfer of the year shot a second round three-under-par 69 to take over the lead from Toto golfer Adolf Muhumuza whose 77 of the day saw him surrender to the defending champion.

After his two-over-par 74 on day one, Otile promised to improve in subsequent rounds, a promise he has kept going into the third round today.

An improved day-two display sees Ronald Rugumayo tied in third place alongside Kenya's Alfred Nandwa, Paul Muchangi and Joseph Chwinya-ai on 149 gross each.

This year's Tusker Malt Lager Uganda Golf Open has not only recorded the biggest number of entries in the main amateur event but has also recorded some firsts that has made it unique in a way.

The event has registered 211 golfers in both the main and subsidiary event of the annual event, 121 more than during last year's tournament.

For the first time the open has a staked prize of a sh250m car for whoever hits a hole in one either in the amateur or professionals' event, due August 29 to September 3.

Apart from the trophy, the overall winner of the amateur event will enjoy an all-expense paid trip to Abu Dhabi courtesy of Etihad Airways, which is also another first in the history of the Uganda Open.

The trip comes complete with three-night's complimentary accommodation at one of the leading hotels in the UAE capital and an unforgettable experience of playing at one of city's championship-standard golf courses.

A round of golf on one of the top four golf courses in Abu Dhabi either at; Yas Links, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, Abu Dhabi and at Abu Dhabi City Golf Clubs ranges from sh140,000-370,000.

This year's event has also recorded the biggest number of foreign amateur entries, totaling to 20, ten more than during last year.

The Kitante course is also for the first time playing longer fairways on some holes despite remaining a par 72.
