Besigye protests delayed investigations

I would like to see the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gen Kale Kayihura in the dock

The former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Presidential candidate Dr. Kiiza Besigye has complained about the delayed inquiries in the treason case against him, saying that it is now becoming persecution.

"I wanted this case to be handled expeditiously so that I continue with my businesses freely but up to now, it has not reached at the High Court where it is supposed to be handled," Besigye said.

He charged that his prosecution is clearly intended to keep him off his work and spend money by continuously reporting to Court.

Besigye also wondered whether his recent demand for an independent audit amounted to treason. He made the comments yesterday shortly after the renewal of his bail for the second time.

Besigye also attacked government over an alleged gold scandal, in which sh24b was lost.

Besigye said he will attend the Makindye Chief Magistrates' Court on Wednesday to witness the prosecution of Police boss General Kale Kayihura.

"I would like to see the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gen Kale Kayihura in the dock, but our institutions are weak, so we should not expect much," he stated.

Dressed in a pair of grey trousers, black court and a blue stripped short-sleeved shirt, Besigye arrived at High Court in Kampala for the extension of his bail at about 11:00am aboard a white Toyota Land cruiser.

He went straight to the registrar's chambers where he spent about five minutes waiting for the High Court Criminal Division Deputy registrar, Mary Eleanor Kayinza to either renew his bail papers or not.

It was the second time Besigye was reporting back before the Court registrar since his release on July 12, 2016.

Last month, Justice Wilson Musene-Musalu, the head of the Criminal Division of the High court released him on a non-cash bail and ordered him to report to court after every 14 days as part of the bail conditions.

Besigye is currently battling treason charges which stem from a video that circulated on social media showing him being sworn in as the president. He was in company of his lawyer Earnest Kalibbala.

He is expected to appear at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court on Friday to know the status of the investigations in the case against him.

Prosecution alleges that Besigye engaged in acts with intent to over throw the government of Uganda.

Immediately after going through the bail application process, Besigye and his lawyer Earnest Kalibbala spent about 20 minutes outside the Court registry having a discussion.
