Two people died and four other were critically injured in an accident on Sunday evening at Kalandaazi, Buwama in Mpigi district on the Kampala-Masaka Highway.

According to Fabian Betubiza, the Katonga Region traffic boss the accident involved two vehicles; a Toyota Rav4 registration number UAJ 798S that was headed to Kampala from Masaka and rammed into a Toyota Land Cruiser UAK 356W that was headied in the opposite direction.

Betubiza said the accident was caused by the driver of the Rav4 who he said was speeding. The vehicle developed a mechanical problem and started to zigzag in the highway ramming into the Land Cruiser.

The four people who were left critically injured were rushed to Nkozi Hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment. They are Plaxeda Nabasirye, Faith Kwagala, Fred Kivumbi the driver of the Rav4 and Joshua Manilagaba who was driving the Land Cruiser.

The accident comes barely a day after priests led by Fr Kizito Ssebunya, the Episcopal Vicar of Mitala Maria held special prayers in memory of victims of accidents on Masaka Road.

Fr Ssebunya cleansed and prayed for areas that included Kampiringisa where over 22 people perished in an accident in July before holding special prayers at Kayabwe.

In his message during the prayers, the Kampala Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, urged government to mark sections of the highway that have had multiple accidents as black spots and put up road signs to warn all road users.

He also attributed the increased carnage on vehicles with poor mechanical condition and recklessness on side on some drivers.

The activities also attracted school children and the regional police officers led by the Katonga Region Police Commander, Abraham Betongyeza.

In his remarks, Betyongyeza revealed that 106 lives have so far been lost in only seven months between Lwera and Maya.
