Police found that the vehicle had been stolen on July 28.

NWOYA - A man driving a reportedly stolen truck has been killed while driving it in Murchison Falls National Park in Nwoya district.

Ronald Yiga, 38, was thought to be destined for neighbouring DR Congo.

The crash happened along the Karuma-Pakwach road. Police believe he might have lost control of the Isuzu tipper lorry, which was found in a bush, some 100 meters off the road and 20km from the Karuma bridge.

Nwoya district police commander Daniel Okello said they discovered the truck had a vandalized ignition system.

And a further probe, using a business card contact found on the dead man, revealed that the vehicle had been stolen on July 28.

Police was told that the truck had not been found since then.

Yiga's body was taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Police's Okello said they are now in touch with the owner of the vehicle.

He said vehicle theft is common and that since January, the Integrated Police Highway Patrol have recovered 16 stolen vehicles.

Police is advising people to equip their vehicles with tracking systems - just in case.

"People must learn to be more cautious with their vehicles. Spend a little on security devices and you are secured," said Okello.
