Rugumayo wins Mayombo Memorial Golf Open

Rugumayo hit six birdies on holes 2, 4, 6, 11, 16 and 17 en-route to winning his second championship on home soil since 2009, when he began serious golf, and in 2012 where he was also the overall winner in the same tournament.

Toro golfer Ronald Rugumayo returned four-under-par 67 to win the 9th edition of the Mayombo Open at Toro Golf Club on Saturday.

Rugumayo hit six birdies on holes 2, 4, 6, 11, 16 and 17 en-route to winning his second championship on home soil since 2009, when he began serious golf, and in 2012 where he was also the overall winner in the same tournament.

"This is my home course and I know all the corners; so I was following my daily routine. But my putting was not good enough, but I remained patient and calm and I was under no pressure; but I should have played better," Rugumayo said.

Adolf Muhumuza finished second, just like he did in his previous outing at the Mehta Open in Lugazi last week, with 71 gross.

David Kamulindwa, Ian Kalema, Sharp Mwesige were the top performers in the men's Groups A-C while Peace Kabasweka and Ann Ngabo took the top prizes in the ladies Groups A&B.

The tournament had earlier been teed-off by the one of the late Brigadier Nobel Mayombo's brother David Olimi who was in the company of former Toro Club Chairman Smart Bwango, club captain George Kaihura and Henry Kaliba in the morning.

Other family members and friends including the sponsor from the Kajura family, Solomon Kajura joined during the prize ceremony.

Uganda Golf Club captain Anthony Kerali who was chief guest pledged sh6.5m towards a solar heater for the refurbished men changing rooms.

The tournament attracted 57 golfers from Toro, Kilembe, Kinyara and the Uganda Golf Clubs.

Mayombo who was New Vision Board Chairman died in 2007, and a golf tournament is played in his memory every year at Toro Club.
