As many as half of the teachers absenting themselves from government-aided schools in Soroti where they were posted are understood to be teaching in private schools, a new report shows.

The latest findings are from the education department of Soroti Municipal council in Soroti Municipality.

Whereas government is committed to paying these teachers, they are spending most of their time teaching in private schools, the report reveals.

Speaking after the release of the report, Soroti municipality mayor Paul Omer said he was disappointed by the findings.

He said high level of absenteeism of teachers in government schools was greatly to blame for the low grades in academic performance within the municipality.

Omer said penalties will be handed down on the culprit teachers.
