'No evidence': Besigye case dismissed

Jul 25, 2016

The state prosecutors did not adduce necessary evidence.

KAMPALA - The case against former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye and others has been dismissed due to lack of evidence.

Besigye, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and others had been charged with disobeying lawful orders as well as with malicious damage.

Makindye Court Grade One Magistrate Fortunate Nyapiri dismissed the case Monday on grounds that state prosecutors had failed to provide the necessary evidence and witnesses.

Opposition politician Besigye and colleagues reportedly wanted to have a meeting at Sharing Hall Nsambya to discuss proposed constitutional amendments in April 2015.

The orders of their arrest had come from police officer Siraje Bakaleke.

Scores of supporters waited along the road at the Kibuye roundabout to greet Besigye, who emerged out of his car roof to cheers and applause from his admirers.

But as Besigye made for the city centre, police led by Aaron Baguma blocked him at Clock Tower and dispersed his supporters. There was heavy deployment of anti-riot policemen.

Besigye wore his trademark blue checkered shirt and stood through the roof of his vehicle.
