Joshua Dombo was declared dead on Saturday after being involved in a fatal crash in Virginia

"We left Uganda for the US in 2002. Then, Joshua Mugabi Dombo was in Senior Three at Kira College Butiki. He became a US citizen in March. He loved soccer, supported Manchester United and he played club soccer.

In high school, they immediately made him school captain for the soccer team," reminisces Moses Dombo, the father of Magabi after the news that his son had been crushed to death in a motor accident in Virginia, US.

Joshua Mugabi Dombo, 30, had just made a year after getting his PhD in human physiology and was a certified doctor in physiotherapy.

He was declared dead on Saturday after being involved in a fatal crash that occurred on Saturday morning in Virginia, involving a Ford F250 pickup truck that was being chased by King George County deputies after it was taking a wrong way in Stafford Country. He died from injuries from the accident.

The pickup, driven by a 16-year-old, hit him and threw him off his motorcycle, leaving him with injuries. He was pronounced dead at Mary Washington Hospital.

According to information from the Virginia State Police, the accident was a result of a chase by the police who had suspected the pickup truck that was heading in the opposite direction of a one-way lane on full speed, forcing them to give a chase.

After knocking Mugabi, who was riding on the Yamaha motorcycle, the pickup also side-swiped a Chevy pick-up that was travelling in the right direction on the one way. Only Dombo was injured in the accident.

The driver of the Ford pickup has since been arrested and charged with homicide and one felony count of eluding police.

Mugabi was a second born of seven. He graduated in June 2015 with a PhD and wed Anna Maples on July 3, last year, one month after getting his doctorate.

"His siblings looked to Josh as a role model. The family is devastated, but since Joshua knew the Lord as his saviour, we believe we shall meet him in glory," his father noted.

Burial arrangements

Plans are underway to return his body. By last evening, the family, including former Bunyole East MP Emmanuel Dombo, had gathered to discuss the way forward.
