Uganda Golf Club's Titus Okwong shot an opening four-under-par 66 to take a one stroke lead after day one of the Mehta Open in Lugazi on Saturday.
The scratch player who originates from Toro Club hit six birdies en-route to taking the lead ahead of another Toro Club member Adolf Muhumuza and Entebbe Club's Herman ‘Deco' Mutebi who are one and two strokes behind.
Okwong is due to fly to the US this month
"I practiced twice on Thursday and Friday but I missed so many birdies; otherwise I would be going into the last round with a comfortable lead. My strategy was to avoid going out of bounds and I achieved that; and I hope to build on this lead on day two," Okwong said.
Lugazi's Clovis Kasangaki is four strokes off going into the last rounds action. Other home boys Godfrey Nsubuga, Nickson Ambovi, Sunday Debbo, Samuel Bogere and Brian Debbo are poised to win the men's Groups A-C.
In the ladies category Lugazi's Betty Alikyogera is ahead of Jinja's Martha Babirye.
