The former defence minister has vowed to concentrate on building the NRM party in Kasese district

Over 70% of the current leaders in Kasese district belong to the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party but they have no alternative but to operate in accordance with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) manifesto.

Those are the words of former minister of defence Dr Crispus Kiyonga who also doubles as Kasese district NRM chairperson.

Kiyonga was speaking for the first time over his loss of the Bukonzo West parliamentary seat for which he was subsequently dropped from Cabinet.

"I want to inform the people of Kasese that the NRM party is still strong in the district and the current leaders although they belong to the opposition, they have no alternative but to work according to the ruling party manifesto" Kiyonga said.

On him not being in cabinet anymore, Kiyonga said, "The people in Kasese should not get worried about my being out of Parliament and Cabinet because for us revolutionists, we work for the party and the country in any position".

Kiyonga said President Yoweri Museveni was free to either appoint him to a Cabinet position or assign him any other duty to serve the country adding that being a Cabinet minister was not a permanent post.

He said that he was going to concentrate on building the NRM party in Kasese district and the fight against poverty among the people through massive mobilization about the growing of mangoes, pineapples and coffee.

Kiyonga was meeting the press at Sandton Hotel in Kasese after another meeting with key cadres of the NRM party in Kasese during which he said they had discussed and laid strategies on how to reclaim the ruling party's glory in the district.

All six MPs representing the district in parliament, majority of district councillors and the chairpersons and the sub-county councils in the area, are all dominated by the opposition FDC party.

"The NRM government is strong and we shall trace the people behind the insecurity incidents that have been taking place in the Rwenzori sub-region and bring them to book" the former defence minister said about security in the district.

Answering a question about the pests that have attacked some mango plantations in the district, Kiyonga said he was going to contact the ministry of agriculture for a remedy.

In his remarks, Kasese district chairperson, Geoffrey Bigogo said, "We shall implement all government development programmes even better because development does not belong to political parties, they belong to the people".
