The drivers were encouraged to put the skills attained to practice

Twenty Three Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) 3rd infantry soldiers have concluded a three months basic training in driving course and warned against stealing fuel.

The pass out ceremony held on Thursday presided over by the 3rd Division Commander Brig Dick Olum at the Military barracks in Mbale town.

Brig Olum alluded that the initiative was the brain child under his command, supported and blessed by the heads of department.

"We thought we could train our own drivers internally in order to improve and manage the vehicle fleets that we have at hand and enhance efficiency within our area of jurisdiction" Olum said.

He also encouraged the drivers to put the best practice in the skills attained such that they become useful not only in UPDF but also outside after serving the force, adding that should also respect traffic regulations.

"Now that the country and especially eastern Uganda is largely peaceful, we need to engage more in training, technical skills and productive ventures like operation wealth creation in order to alleviate poverty and transform our livelihoods" he added.

The Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) Elgon Region James Okumu Neema applauded the soldiers for attaining the minimum basic skills but cautioned them of the precautions saying that they should always respect road signs.

"Ensure regular vehicle check-ups, respect for the vehicle and road users, observe road signs, avoid panicking while in a vehicle and above all maintain discipline to avoid accidents" Okumu said.

One of the female drivers acknowledged the opportunity she has got. "Am happy for this program because this is one of the skills I have been longing to achieve in my dream. I am confident I will practice these skills in day to day work" Private Mary Nabirye said.

The non-commission officer's basic drivers' training is the first of its kind in 3rd area of responsibility, witnessing 23 trainees complete the internal program and three of them were females.
