Don't just throw away that old car tyre

When tyres get old most motorists think they cannot be used for anything else but rather prefer to throw them away.

However, those who are innovative have made good use of them and when you look at the different things that have been made out of old tires you will appreciate the level of innovation that Ugandans have.

Swings

According to Lynnette Apondi the head teacher Seeta Kindergarten, out of old tyres, children swings have been made and these really look good.

She says most school and managers of children play grounds have abandoned metallic swings and have gone in for swings made out of old car tyres because they are user friendly.

"Tyres are not as hard as metals so when the children are playing and accidentally hit themselves on swings made out of tires they will not hurt themselves so much as compared to metallic swings, "she explains.

Used to demarcate runways at schools

Apondi explains that children are playful in nature so their safety is priority to all school administrators. Apart from using barbed wire, schools have decided to use old tyres painted with different colors to demarcate runways so that children can only play from grass and not runways.

"The different painting on the tires make the school look beautiful, "she adds.

Used to design compounds

Once painted and cut in different shapes, old tires can be used to decorate gardens making your compound look beautiful.

Rehema Nandutu a gardener notes that old tyres can be curved around your garden trees so that they help in retaining water around your trees.

"This helps your garden fruit trees grow well that even during the dry season they will not be so much affected," she says.

Making sandles 

Most Ugandans have made business out of the old tyres The have made sandals and have improved on them in different ways. Asaph Mwesigwa who deals in sandals made out of tires says the business is very profitable.

He says once it's made with a good design, customers will always buy because it's believed that sandals made out of tires are strong and last longer.
