According to the police spokesman, Fred Enanga, a group of unknown gunmen raided the police station apparently to rescue Dan Odiya Oola from the force.

The police have linked the Sunday night raid on Gulu Police Station by armed men to the arrest of a Uganda People's Congress party deputy secretary for mobilization.

According to the police spokesman, Fred Enanga, a group of unknown gunmen raided the police station apparently to rescue Dan Odiya Oola from the force.

However, Enanga explained that the attackers were repulsed by a joint security force of the police and military.

The attackers, the police said, engaged officers in a fire fight for about 30 minutes before they were overwhelmed by the police and military's firepower.

"They were forced to flee, abandoning 5 SMG rifles, 1 PK machine gun. The town has been reinforced and is under control, while frantic efforts to track down the fleeing attackers and also establish casualties suffered, is on-going," a police statement reads.

The security forces, the police publicist said, reinforced and fortified the police station because they had credible intelligence about the planned raid.

"The attackers, who emerged from the main entrance to the police station, at around 8:30pm, engaged the security forces in a fire fight for about 30 minutes," Enanga explained. He stated that two police officers and a soldier who sustained injuries during the shootout are currently admitted at a military hospital.
