Lack of understanding language failing students' in schools

Lack of understanding language has highly contributed to the failure of most students at various levels of education Jonathan Kamwana the Jinja Municipal education officer has said.

Kamwana made the remarks while officiating at first Spelling Bee challenge at Horizion College international in Jinja municipality on Saturday.

"Our students lack language which is making them fail to study well, once we have these challenges that make them understand and also read then they shall also improve on studies,' he noted.

Kamwana noted that the current generation of students have to be inspired and motivated to study better.

The exercise attracted a total of 22 secondary schools from eastern Uganda, Kampala ,Buikwe and Kayunga.

Joel Bamwise the eastern region coordinator of Uganda Spelling Bee said in Busoga region most schools were not aware about the competition.

Bamwise called upon more schools to come on board adding that they are going to have competitions from district levels, regional's and national challenge where they will select three best performing students who will go and take part in the international Spelling Bee competition that will held in South Africa next year.

He said they are working with the national Spelling Bee to promote the competitions among schools.

 Dennis Owora the head teacher of Horizon College said having the challenge was aimed at helping students learn how to read, understand and mention words.

"We want our students to read, understand and also mention words. We also want them to be first thinkers in work,' he noted.

Sehgal Ayushman(year 12) from the college won the challenge and received a certificate with golden medal and sh200,000/-.

 Second was Catharine Nambogga (form  three ) from Viva college Jinja walked away with a silver medal, sh150,000/- and a certificate.

third was Singh Yashudhan (year 9) who received sh100,000/-, bronze medal and certificate.
