May 25, 2016

53 years ago today, the OAU is formed.

MAY 25, 1963

The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was formed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with 32 signatory member states, with Uganda as one of the founder members. At this summit meeting, Prime Minister Milton Obote offered Uganda as a training ground for African liberation groups.

The OAU was dissolved on July 9, 2002 and was replaced by the African Union (AU) to achieve greater unity and solidarity between the African countries and to promote peace, security, and stability on the continent, as some of its objectives.
