Abel Dhaira memorial run announced

The run will have both 5 and 8 kilometers

The family, Abel Dhaira foundation and friends from Jinja district have organized the Abel Dhaira run in memory of the fallen football star where they expect to raise sh19m to build a statue. 

Dhaira who in his short career played for the Uganda Cranes and IBin Iceland is being remembered by friends, family, well-wishers who identified him as a person who challenged them to develop talent. 

According to Faisal Mayemba the chief organizer of the run which will be held on Hero's Day in June explained that they are working together with FUFA, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) team and Jinja Senior Secondary School which groomed him into the player he became. 

Mayemba added that they are also working closely with Jinja Municipal Council.  He said the essence of organizing this event is to raise funds that will enable them erect a state of the art monument at the recently renamed stadium. 

Mayemba explained that the statue will be built at the Abel Dhaira Stadium in Walukuba in Masese division, Jinja Municipality where he used to train from while in Jinja. 

Mayemba said the marathon will have both 5 and 8 kilometers starting from Jinja SSS and the finishing point will be at the stadium and tickets will be sold at various points in Jinja. 

He added that other points from which to buy tickets in Kampala and other regions will be communicated in due course. 

Kezaala Muhammad Baswale the outgoing Jinja Mayor said the stadium is going to be reconstructed with an artificial turf with support from FUFA.
