slot machines which are now in almost every trading centre in the district are encouraging young people not to work and crime is likely to increase as people look for a quick buck to bet.

Mbarara district council has established a tax of sh100,000 per month on slot or betting machines in the district.

The tax was passed Friday during a council session at Kamukuzi council hall.

The motion to levy the tax was moved by Arinanye Robert, the Bugamba sub county district councilor.

In his submission, Arinanye noted that the betting and slot machines should be taxed heavily to get more income from them or prohibit them from the district.

Speaking to Radio West after the council session, Arinanye said that these slot machines which are now in almost every trading centre in the district are encouraging young people not to work and crime is likely to increase as people look for a quick buck to bet.
