KCCA says meat should be stamped right from the abattoir before it is sold

As Christians celebrate the Easter holiday, Kampala butchery traders association has warned its traders against selling dead animal meat.

The warning was issued by the association chairman, Musa Ssenabulya, during an inspection of meat stalls in Wandegeya market recently.

He revealed that the association has faced with a number of challenges where people butcher sick, dead and stole animals.

"We shall not allow anybody who is not authorized to sell meat, it has been observed that some people establish stalls to sell that kind of meat, but we have made strategies to ensure that all the meat to be sold is stamped and must be sold in only authorized places like in markets, " Ssenabulya said.

He added that with assistance from KCCA, they will ensure that everything is fine. Senabulya also asked traders not to over price the meat this season saying it might scare away clients.

"We anticipate meat to be sold at a price not exceeding sh15, 000. We are sure that this is a friendly price which will be afforded by majority of the people who have been fasting as they commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, "he added.

Meanwhile KCCA has also warned saying all meat to be sold during Easter celebrations must be gotten from a registered abattoir which has been fully inspected.

KCCA spokesperson, Peter Kaujju, stated that all the animals to be slaughtered must be in good health and all the meat to be transported must bare a stamp.

"Our health team will be stationed at every abattoir to ensure that all the regulations are followed, "he said

Some of the registered abattoirs approved to sell meat include the Kampala City Abattoir on Port bell road, Kalerwe abattoir among other private slaughter houses like Quality Cuts.
