NRM to use consensus in choosing candidate for speaker

They say an election may cause friction within the party ranks.

The NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) is to draw up regulations that will guide the party's electoral commission on the nomination of candidates for the posts of speaker and deputy speaker of parliament.

Party spokesperson Ofwono Opondo says CEC has to sit and consider the regulations which will be used by Dr.Tanga Odoi's commission to nominate these candidates.

Opondo notes the names of the candidates who will have been successfully nominated will then be forwarded to CEC for further consideration and review before allowing the candidates to campaign within the party caucus.

He however notes that the party hopes to use consensus to reach a final decision on the candidates who will represent the party in the race instead of an election which may cause friction within the party ranks adding that voting will only be used as a last resort.
