It's going to be the biggest project in sub-Saharan Africa

The construction of a 10MW grid-connected Soroti solar power project has been launched. The plant is to be built in Opuyo located three kilometers from Opuyo sub-station. The project is to cost $19m (approx. sh64b).

It's going to be the biggest project in sub-Saharan Africa according to Stephane Bontemps the managing director, Access Power.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday afternoon, the state minister for minerals Peter Lokeris hailed partners from Germany, European Union and United Kingdom for bringing the project to Soroti.

He said that with cheap power unemployed youth shall start cottage industries that in turn shall bring money to their pockets.

"When you get cottage industries to absorb university graduates given how limited employment in government is limited, this helps youngsters to get meaningful employment" Lokeris said.

The LC5 Soroti expressed gratitude to Access Uganda Limited for offering the community free power, drilling boreholes and building houses for teachers.

The RDC John Stephen Ekoom says investors are able to come to Uganda due to existing peace and stability that government has been able to put in place.
