Two drown in Lake Victoria

Fear gripped residents of Kabuuka landing site in Malongo Sub County, Mayuge district after one person drowned on Friday evening in Lake Victoria.

Mayuge District investigations officer, Abdul Nasser Mulimira, identified the deceased as Robert Ssekandi, 23, a resident of Nango village in Malongo Sub County. He identified the survivors only as Paul, 20 and Kyakwe, 18, all residents of Nango.

Mulimira said that the trio had gone fishing at Kabuuki waters when the boat they were using capsized following a strong wind.

 "The strong wind blew the boat they were using and it capsized. One person drowned and other two were rescued by some fishermen," Mulimira said. He added that the men were using a small boat locally known as Bawo tatu.

In a similar circumstance, a body of a man suspected to be in early 40's was retrieved in Kabuuki waters by police and fishermen on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Livingstone Okware, a resident of Nango village in Malongo Sub County.

Mulimira said that Okware went missing for six days and his body was retrieved from Lake Victoria when they were searching for Robert Ssekandi's body.

Both bodies were retrieved and taken to Mayuge health centre for post-mortem and later police ordered relatives to take bodies for burial.

In another incident, police rescued a 60-year-oldman from being killed by an angry mob in Kabuuki landing site.

George William Okuta was severely beaten by residents for allegedly poisoning James Waiswa(deceased).

The area LC1 chairperson, Stephen Buyinza said that Okuta allegedly poisoned his friend four days back leading to his death.
