Rebecca Kadaga’s tenure as Speaker of the ninth Parliament ends in mid-May. She is however, eligible to seek for re-election.

The government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa has dismissed media reports that the NRM caucus to convene over the weekend will determine the next Speaker of Parliament.

Addressing the press on Thursday at the Prime Minister's conference hall, Nankabirwa said: "It is not true that the MPs elect have been called to speak about whom will be the next Speaker of Parliament."

She however, stated that as a party they will at the right time campaign for the person they want to be the speaker.

In the corridors of parliament, there are reports that the deputy speaker Jacob Oulanya and foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa have already started to quietly campaign for the third most powerful position.
