Soroti accident claims family of four

Six people died following a fatal motor accident on Monday evening along Soroti-Lira Highway.

Four died on the spot while two others died on arrival to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.

Juma Hussein Nyene, Police spokesperson East Kyoga identified the dead as Abdu Wambade, 54, the driver of the ambulance, Jenifer Anyabo, a nurse, Teddy Amolo, 20, Emmanuel Eceru, Kevin Iwatu and Jeniffer Achen, 74.

According to Nyene, Amolo , Eceru, Iwatu and Achen are from one family.

Nyene revealed that Amolo who was pregnant had developed complications at Atiirir Health center 4 in Katine Sub County while giving birth and she had been referred to Soroti Hospital for further attention.

 

On their way, the ambulance registration number UG 3396 belonging to the hospital rammed into an E-Plus vehicle registration number UAJ 971V also heading towards Soroti town.  

"The information we have is that the vehicle developed mechanical problems and was moving slowly while the ambulance in trying to rescue Amolo's situation rammed it from behind. The four occupants died instantly, the two who were rushed to the hospital died" Nyene said. 

One of the eye witnesses told New Vision that shortly before the accident occurred, the truck had no backlights and there was a huge plume of smoke emerging from it.      

The ambulance was left badly mangled at the front making hard time for sympathisers and police to recover the bodies especially the driver.

Mohammed Muangala, a brother to Wambade the driver of the ambulance, said the deceased left three widows and about 13 children.
