50 players register for Uganda International Badminton Open

Uganda’s best Edwin Ekiring is among the top guns lined up at the four day tournament

Uganda International Badminton Open organiser, Simon Mugabi said they expect an exciting tournament starting on Thursday at Lugogo in Kampala following the massive turn up of participants as they strive to better their rankings ahead of the Olympic Games.

Mugabi added that they have registered over 50 international players, an increase of over 30 athletes as compared to the previous edition.

"We expect the biggest turn up ever and at the moment 32 men and 28 women have already confirmed their partiipation. They start arriving in the country today and the last bunch will jet in tomorrow," Mugabi stated.  

"Badminton players are all aiming at improving their ranking ahead of the deadline in a bid to better their chances of participating at the Olympics."

Uganda's best Edwin Ekiring is among the top guns lined up at the four day tournament together with Jacob Maliekal and Dinuka Karunaratna who won the 2015 and 14 editions respectively.

Pedro Martins from Portugal, Kisyov Blagovest (Bulgeria), Niluka Karunaratna (Sri Lanka), Shu Howard (USA), Luka Wraber (Australia) and Misha Zilberman from Israel are the other cream players in the men's side.
