Mabirizi concedes defeat, congratulates Museveni

Mabirizi was in bullish mood on polling day and projected a 53% win for himself but eventually fell short; polling 23,762 votes representing 0.26% of the votes cast

He predicted his victory with 53%, now the Independent presidential candidate Joseph Elton Mabirizi has conceded defeat and was the first among the candidates to congratulate the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer Yoweri Kaguta Museveni after he was declared the winner. 

"I would like to convey my personal best wishes to President Kaguta Museveni. Lets work as Ugandans and build the nation," Mabirizi said on social networking site Twitter. 

He also commended security services for their role in ensuring that the elections were mostly peaceful and violence free. 

"I thank you all for turning out en-masse for the Feb 18th General Elections. I commend the election body for holding a free & fair election," he added. 

Mabirizipolled 23,762 votes representing 0.26% of the 9.2m votes cast. 

"When the tally is done, I hope to win by 53%," Mabirizi told reporters after casting his ballot at Lufuka in Wakiso District.
