Records fall at Seals Club league meet

Records tumbled as the first Seals Swim Club League Meet set in motion this year's swimming calendar at Kampala Parents School pool on Saturday.

And majority of the youngsters who participated in the first competitive event of the year must have left the venue inspired; after Darren Murray, Seals' current resident swim coach from the Swim Lab Aquatics in Cape Town displayed rare gliding technique, wowing the hundreds of participants.

Competing in the 15 & Over category, the 24 year old South African swimmer did not only set new meet records in the 50M and 100M backstroke events in 31.86 and 1.02.91 respectively, but his glide for over 15 meters under water was a rare occurrence for the Uganda's swimming fraternity; and the kids loved it.

He beat Nuwa Senkebe's 50m backstroke record set in February last year by 3.27 seconds while bettering Arnold Kisulo's 100m backstroke record by 1.22 seconds.

Sixteen records were broken at this league meet, four in the women's category and twelve in the men's categories with Ssinzi Nabatanzi improving Katherine Bowmaker's 100m butterfly record by 2.75 seconds.

Anthea Mudanye also improved her record over the same distance in 1.25.49 beating Avice Meya's record by 9.9 seconds. She also improved her 100m breaststroke record by 0.82 seconds.

Ssinzi Nabatanzi was the other star of the day improving her 100m backstroke record she set in September last year, in the 11-12 category, by 2.77 seconds.

In the boys category (15&Over) Nuwa Senkebe Serunjogi was the best performer on the day improving his 800m (9.43.79)  and 200m (2.14.43) freestyle records set in February last year by 4.47 and 4.57 seconds respectively.

Trevor Mwachoka, Christian Musenze, Ronald Ssegwanyi, John Kafumbe and Pirates Swim Club's Chris Gregory and Jeremy Katende were also outstanding.

Swimmers from Altona Swim Club, Shark teens and Makerere University competed in the one-day event.
