Feb 06, 2016

Uganda and Kenya are not members of the zone and have been all along been competing as guests; so they will be at a disadvantage with each sending one team of four.

Africa Zone V1 Golf defending Champion Uganda will defend their title under a new format following substantial changes to the event which were discussed and agreed on in Uganda last year.

Unlike last year when Uganda fielded 8 players and won the championship, they will now field a team of 4 players with each Region 5 (former Zone V1) country sending a maximum of two teams.

Uganda and Kenya are not members of the zone and have been all along been competing as guests; so they will be at a disadvantage with each sending one team of four.

Zone V1 was renamed Region 5 by the Africa Sports Council and comprise of ten countries that form part of that region namely; Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Each of these countries will send to up to two teams of four players each in the tournament to be played at the Royal Swazi Golf Club in Swaziland, April 11-16.

An 18-hole stroke play qualifier to be held on day one will set the annual tournament in motion, with the best 3 scores counting towards the team score.

Based upon the results of the stroke play qualifier, teams will then be seeded into divisions with 8 teams in the "A" Division.

A country versus country head to head knockout match-play will then be held on days; 2 and 3 of the tournament, before the final round to determine the winner.

No country will be allowed to have more than one team in any division according to a communication sent out to guest teams by the president of the Swaziland Golf Union Albert Mhlanga.

"At this stage an invitation to your Union is for only one team as we await responses from the Region 5 countries, recognizing your participation in Zone 6 tournaments for a continuous number of years," Mhlanga stated.
