Kayondo elected UTTA boss in dramatic fashion

In a dramatic move, Douglas Kayondo was unanimously elected as president of the embattled Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) on Saturday.

The DMK Tennis Club chairman was unopposed together with his executive board in the assembly that involved delegates from 18 clubs.

The move is meant to usher in a new lease of life in the association rocked by administrative wrangles.

Kayondo was the vice president of the Robert Jaggwe-led former executive that was disbanded by National Council of Sports (NCS) after bitter wrangles polarized UTTA.

The election of Kayondo however comes on the background of the legal battle between NCS and former chairman Jaggwe.

After NCS appointed an interim committee to streamline the association and organize new elections, Jaggwe secured a court order restraining NCS and its agents from the exercise.

However, no members from NCS or the interim committee attended the extra ordinary assembly at Lugogo tennis courts.

Like Kayondo almost all members of the former were elected unopposed. Former treasurer Monica Kisakya is vice president gender while Ronnie Seruyo is vice president (technical).

Hillary Kimbuggwe of Makerere Business School (MUBS) is secretary while Ketra Aguti is treasurer.

The elections seem to be a move to avoid the delay of the court battle as explained by UTTA trust chairman Francis Mulinda.

"This is a new body of table tennis. We have already acquired a trustee certificate of incorporation and we are going to apply to council (NCS) for recognition.

Following his election, Kayondo promised to steer the association to greater heights.

"I believe we are well aligned and position table tennis. We have experience and passion and ready to steer the sport to another level," he said.
