Micho counting positives from draw

The game ended 2-2, but Micho wants to use the experience to ensure that the Cranes are a better team when they come up against Zambia in their next encounter on Saturday.

Uganda Cranes coach Multin ‘Micho' Srodejovic will pick out the many positives the team realized from their Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) first encounter against Mali on Tuesday.

The game ended 2-2, but Micho wants to use the experience to ensure that the Cranes are a better team when they come up against Zambia in their next encounter on Saturday.

"We need to give credit to the team. It was a tough game against an experienced opposition but they managed to contain them. We slipped twice and paid dearly but rather than blaming the players, we need to look at the positives and come back as a fresh team," said Micho.

Goals from Erisa Ssekisambu and team captain Faruku Miya twice gave Uganda the lead but they could not hold on as they shared the spoils with the Eagles of Mali at the Umuganda stadium in Rubavu.

Micho was forced to substitute Miya and goalkeeper Ismail Watenga due to injuries in a physical game that left many of the Ugandan players with knocks.

He recalled the experience of the Mali team in the World Cup and African Nations Cup and said that Uganda managed to contain them well.

"It was a good team with a great experience. Our players complimented each other, kept them at bay and even created chances. We are improving each day," Micho observed.

He said that he had forewarned the players of a physical game when they played a friendly with Cameroon at the Njeru Technical Centre.

"We will now try to build from here and see that we put up a good game,' said Micho.  "Now what we have to do is to go back to the drawing board and work on the mistakes that cost us."
