Boxer Edward Kakembo is still shocked that sports journalists under their umbrella group Uganda Sports Journalists have picked him for the monthly award.

Just as Kakembo was going through his routine of training, his phone rang and he received the news that he is Nile Special USPA sports personality of the month of December 2015.

"Oh!, why me? Out of so many boxers in the country why have you chosen me?" a surprised Kakembo said, "Anyway I defended the pride of our country."

Perhaps Kakembo was right to be surprised. For a clean record of ten wins, three of which are by knock out, he had not received recognition for any of the wins.

So he did not expect any awards for beating Nigerian opponents Usman Waidi at National Stadium Sports Hall, Lagos, Nigeria on Boxing Day to win the hitherto the vacant African Boxing Union on majority points.

To him, this is a challenge that he has to stand up to, as he plans to defend the victory against USA based Ugandan Dan Lutaya at Nakivubo stadium in April, 2016.

"I'm proud of the win and the USPA award is a big motivation for me. It also comes as a challenge because the next time I fail to make it, you people will be the ones criticizing me," Kakembo added.

The featherweight boxer beat footballer Dennis Onyango in the journalists' awards contest on Monday when he gathered 490 points against 415 points for Onyango. He will be crowned at a dinner at Imperial Royale Hotel on Thursday courtesy of Nile Special.
