The only strategy to end poverty in the country is through restoring cooperatives, the minister for trade and industry, Amelia Kyambadde has said.

Kyambadde, MP Mawokota North, noted that cooperatives come with advantages like ready market for different agricultural produce for all people at various levels which has been the biggest challenge for the country.

"That is why I have been advocating for the revival of these cooperatives. It is the only engine to the country's development and the easiest way to eradicate poverty," she added.

She made the remarks while speaking to her supporters in Mpigi town playground on Tuesday. Kyambadde who is the NRM flag bearer and the incumbent, is to face Mayinja Tebusweke (Democratic Party) and Grace Kansiime (Independent).

She said her main focus is reviving cooperatives in her area to fight the high unemployment rate among the youth.

"When you revitalize cooperatives, automatically you invigorate agriculture, because many people will get involved knowing where to market their produce," she said.

She explained that cooperatives help to mobilise farmers and protect them against price fluctuations.
