Uganda All Stars team coach Mike Mutebi has unveiled a twenty-man squad that he believes will match the Barcelona Legends when the two clash in a charity match at Namboole, December 12.

Proceeds from the match will go towards the setting up of a high-performance RG Football Academy that will start thereafter.

Addressing a press conference at Big Mike’s Cocktail bar in Kampala yesterday, Mutebi said he had picked the team from different generations of players that the current fans are familiar with.

The players include Sadiq Wassa, Jamal Salim, Simeon Masaba, Edgar Watson, Abubakar Tabula, George Ssimwogerere, Nestory Kizito, Geoffrey Kizito, Tonny Mawejje, Hakim Magumba, Vincent Kayizzi, Steven Bengo, David Obua, Geoffrey Sserunkuma, Ibrahim Buwembo, Geoffrey Massa, Mike Sserumaga, James Odoch, Phillip Obwiny and Musa Mudde.

Flanked by the organisers and sponsors’ representatives from Nile Breweries (Isaac Sekasi), Rwenzori Water, Uganda Tourism Board (Vincent Mugaba), PayWay (Lonah Kamugisha), KFC (Sithabile Maphumulo), UAP Insurance (Dong Singh) and Sheraton Hotel (Jennifer Musiime), Mutebi said some Ugandan stars had been left out due to squad limitations but they would be considered for similar matches in future.

“We are trying to target the new millennium fans, so we couldn’t have the likes of Hassan Mubiru, Kefa Kisala because they are well represented in this squad while Jackson Mayanja is busy in Tanzania,” Mutebi said.

Mutebi, who will be assisted by Sam Ssimbwa and Paul Ssali, said other legends like Tom Lwanga, Jimmy Kirunda, Jimmy Muguwa, Barnabas Mwesige will be recognised during the match.

The All Stars team will start training on December 7 before entering camp on December 10 at Sky Hotel.

The Barcelona team will touch down on December 8 before touring Bwindi, Murchison Falls and other sites until December 11 when they will return to Kampala for a dinner with several stakeholders before the match.

RG Football Academy director Rayco Garcia thanked the sponsors for giving back to the community saying the project was not for him but for the people of Uganda.

“You are all the authentic actors of this movie, I am just a small part of the project but it is a pleasure for me to be here and launch the match. I’m not promising to produce the next Messi in Uganda, but what I promise is I will work hard to give Ugandan players opportunities to try out in Europe, because I have realized that many Ugandan players can play there,” Garcia stated.

The press conference was attended by among others, Uganda Players Association’s Paul Mukatabala who was all praises for the project.

“We are happy to be part of this,” Mukatabala said.

Fans will access the match tickets from across the over 1500 Pay Way outlets at Total, Shell and several supermarkets across the country.

Ordinary and VIP tickets going for sh30, 000 and sh150,000 respectively can also be accessed at KFC outlets.
