Namugongo Road works near completion

IN one week’s time, contractors Stirling and Abubaker Technical Services will handle over Namugongo Road to UNRA after months of overhaul ahead of the Pope’s visit to Uganda.

A team led by Eng. Constant Munyambanza, UNRA’s central regional manager, took a tour from Kireka all through to Bukerere and both contractors asserted that they will be through by November 22 just under a week before the Pope’s arrival.

“As you have seen, the tarmacking and road marking is complete, walkways are done, over 28 shades have been erected and what is left is the shrubs covering the roadside trenches and road signs which should be complete in the next few days,” said Munyambanza.

Stirling was contracted to work on Kireka-Kyaliwajjala-Namugongo Road while Abubaker Technical Services was contracted to work on Sseeta-Namugongo, Naalya-Kyaliwajjala and Kyaliwajjala-Kira among other feeder roads that will be used to divert traffic when the Pope is in the country.

The sh25bn project has seen the once impassable Namugongo-Sseeta Road tarmacked and Munyambanza said that it will greatly reduce on the traffic jam between Kireka-Sseeta along Jinja Road and that many people visiting the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine and the Namugongo Museum from Jinja side will have no reason passing through Kireka.

The Pope is scheduled to arrive in the country for the two-day visit on November 27 and many people within and outside the country are expected to flock Namugongo where he Pope will conduct a service.  

Meanwhile, Kira Town Council passed a directive for people along the road to beautify their front yards by putting up pavers and landlords around Kireka, Bweyogerere, Kyaliwajjala and Namugongo have heeded to the directive.
