Talk of regional integration and one of the activities that come to mind is the MTN Kampala marathon.

The marathon annually draws participants from most of the East and Central African region.

Burundi and Southern Sudan will this year join the huge East African Community entry in Uganda’s biggest athletics event.

Uganda Athletics Federation president Domenic Otuchet (top) said all the five EAC countries usually have participants.

Burundi and Southern Sudan will however be making their maiden entry in the elite category.

MTN fully sponsors up to 10 athletes from the five countries.

Other elite runners can also enter the event provided they have clearance of their national federations.

Otuchet said registration of elite athletes started yesterday.

Kenya and Uganda have dominated the top places of the marathon.

This year’s event will also serve as a qualifi er for the world half marathon championship due next year in Cardiff, Wales.

Proceeds from this year’s race will go towards improving health in Kampala’s public schools. Previous editions had proceeds going to provision of clean water across the country.

Uganda’s leading media house New Vision, Huawei, Stanbic Bank, Rwenzori and National athletics body UAF have again partnered with MTN to organize the marathon.
