BEN Kaganda and Selina Katumba were in top form on day-one of the Uganda Swimming Federation-Excel Independence Swimming gala, at the Kampala International School of Uganda pool to inspire their side to an early lead of the two-day championship.

 

Kaganda won two events while Katumba topped three events to set their school on course of winning the annual event.

 

Kaganda, 12, returned the best time in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke events while Katumba also led in the 11-12 years old category in the same events and the 200m freestyle to lead day-one by 64 points.

 

Second placed Greenhill had Abba Mayanja as the only gold medalist on the day in the 50m butterfly but his efforts were supplemented by Emma Kiwanuka, Tinisha Birungi, Bailey Sasha, Gift Lunkuse, Mathew Odada and Martha Ayulo among others to bring them within touching distance of the leaders.

 

Hosts KISU were led by Martin Robin and Mercedes Amani while the British School who are fourth had Kirabo Namutebi and his brother Tendo Mukalazi as their best on the day.

 

Ronald Ssegwanyi and Marina Nakimuli were in top form in the 15 and over category for Makerere University who are fifth after day-one.

 

The championship ends on Sunday.
