Atimango, Auma, Nzige in team for Olympics qualifiers

Debutants Charity Atimango, Grace Auma, Samiya Ayikoru and Irene Nzige will add physical strength, speed and pace to the Lady Rugby Cranes 7s team traveling to Johannesburg South Africa for the African Olympics qualifiers due September 26-27.

Pool A: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Namibia and Zambia.

Pool B: Kenya, Tunisia, Madagascar, Senegal and Botswana

Debutants Charity Atimango, Grace Auma, Samiya Ayikoru and Irene Nzige will add physical strength, speed and pace to the Lady Rugby Cranes 7s team traveling to Johannesburg South Africa for the African Olympics qualifiers due September 26-27.

Atimango and Nzige who have been regular 15s team members make their debut on the 7s team this year.

Strength and conditioning coach Helen Buteme told New Vision that the two will boost the team’s physical strength which is much needed.

“The new players Nzige and Atimango are very strong ball carriers and enforcers whom I think give the team advantage when in possession,” Buteme stated.

“Auma and Ayikoru add speed, pace to the team and good defence which is much needed in the 7s aside rugby,” Buteme added.

Buteme added that the team is responding well to training and targets finishing in the top four.

The team will play traditional rivals South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia in group stages in Pool A of the Tournament.

The twelve lady squad travelling has Irene Nzige, Charity Atimango, Grace Auma, Brenda Kayiyi, Charlotte Mudoola, Claire Anena, Prossy Nakakande, Emmanuella Oroma, Harriet Kayonjo, Mary Kyoita, Samiya Ayikoru and Hildah Nyiraguhirwa.

Officials include Allan Musoke (coach), Dorothy Nekesa (Manager) and Wilbroad Makumbi (physiotherapist).
