Women's squad for Olympic qualifiers named

Uganda’s national women rugby 7s team coach Allan Musoke has named his final squad for the African Olympic qualifiers.

Pool A: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Namibia and Zambia

Pool B: Kenya, Tunisia, Madagascar, Senegal and Botswana



Uganda’s national women rugby 7s team coach Allan Musoke has named his final squad of 12 players for the African Olympic qualifiers due September 26 -27 at the Barnard Stadium, Kempton Park in Johannesburg in South Africa.


The team leave next weekend (September 24) to Johannesburg where they face traditional rivals South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia in Pool A of the tournament’s group.

According to Charlotte Mudoola, one of the most experienced players on the team, they will be out to revive Uganda's glory on the rugby map.

"We are set and with a combination of young talented players, we expect to finish among the top three," she told New Vision.

The winner will qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Notable on the named squad are debutants in the sevens version of the game: Irene Nzige, Charity Eva Atimango (prop) and Grace Auma.

Others are Brenda Kayiyi, Charlotte Mudoola, Claire Anena, Prossy Nakakande (Black Panthers), Emmanuella Oroma (Walukuba Titans), Harriet Kayonjo, Odoyi Mary Kyoita, Samiya Ayikoru (Thunderbirds) and Hildah Nyiraguhirwa (Entebbe Sharks).

Allan Musoke is team coach, Dorothy Nekesa (Manager) and Wilbroad Makumbi (physiotherapist).
