You would think Ivan Byekwaso had already won as he left for the US to compete in the International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) Natural Universe, in Austin, Texas September 5-6.

Accompanied by a big contingent of fellow church members of ETM Church, sportsmen, and family members, Byekwaso’s fans caused a jam and briefly paralysed work at the departure lounge, as he was seen off by among others his sponsor Jackson Pemba of Pemba Sports Africa and UBBFA president Twaha Ddungu.

Church members held posters of the athlete, lifted him high and took turns for selfies before singing praises for the muscleman who is keen on building on last year’s international performance.

“This is our champion, he is number one, we believe in him, he is capable and is going to win the Mr. Universe,” they shouted as bemused onlookers got close to catch a glimpse of Byekwaso

Byekwaso, 32,  won a bronze at the INBA Natural Body Building Olympiad in San Diego in November last year adding to an earlier silver he won at the World Championships in Slovakia in June.

Byekwaso has travelled early to acclimatise ahead of the two-day championship on which has turned focus since the year began.

“I’m no longer only a medal prospect but I want to win the overall crown because I have prepared for a year for this event. I have worked and prayed very hard and I’m going to come back with a gold medal, Ugandans should just continue praying for me,” Byekwaso said.

“Ugandans are blessed with talent, we should all rally behind this man and wish him well because he is going to represent the country at the world stage thereby creating awareness about the country so we should all pray for him,” Pemba said.
