Legendary Dutch footballer Patrick Kluivert is in Uganda for a tour which will climax with signing of a deal to develop football.

Amos Wekesa, a board member of Uganda Tourism Board in charge of marketing, said Kluivert is scheduled to sign a memorandum of understanding with UNICEF on Monday geared towards setting up a football academy in Uganda.

Reports indicate Kluivert has been offered land on the fringes of the national park to set up a tourism lodge and will track  gorillas at the end of the year when he returns.

It is understood that several Barcelona legends will  be coming to Uganda in December to play against Ugandan legends. Kluivert is accompanied by another former Barcelona star Rayco Garcia who has been in the country for almost two weeks.

“It is this that we want to be associated with, the onus is on us to show the world the best of our country, and Kluivert has been enchanted about Uganda,” said Wekesa.

Wekesa says Uganda’s tourism is on the move and the projection of this positive side will open countless doors for a sector that boasts unique attractions not found even in the tourism state of Netherlands.

These attractions include the source of the world’s longest river, the Nile, largest population of the mountain gorillas, most diverse country culturally and the biggest mountain blocks in Africa in the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountains.

Stephen Asiimwe, the UTB chief said Garcia and Kluivert’s arrivals are an endorsement.

Kluivert has a rich football story with a global following.

Last year, he was the assistant manager to Louis van Gaal (now Manchester United manager) for the Netherlands national football team, in their third-place finish at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

As a player, he played as a striker for Ajax, Milan, FC Barcelona, Newcastle United, Valencia, PSV Eindhoven, and Lille. He is currently coaching the Curaçao national football team.

Part of Ajax's golden generation of the 1990s, aged 18, Kluivert scored the winner in the 1995 UEFA Champions League Final. He spent six years with Spanish club Barcelona where he formed a successful partnership with Rivaldo, and won the 1998 and 1999 Spanish La Liga championship and the 1998 Copa del Rey.

Kluivert played for the Dutch national team from 1994 to 2004, and with 40 goals from 79 appearances was their highest goalscorer until surpassed by Robin van Persie in 2013.
