Makerere University will have 21 new science courses, starting in the 2014/2015 academic year.

Makerere University will have 21 new science courses, starting in the 2014/2015 academic year.

Charles Ssentongo, the deputy registrar in charge of undergraduate admission, said the courses were recently approved by the senate, the institution’s supreme academic body.

One of the unique courses is Bachelor of Optometry in the college of health sciences. Optometry is concerned with the health of the eyes and related structures, as well as vision, visual systems and vision information processing in humans.

The other 20 courses are at the College of veterinary Medicine, animal Resources and Bio-security (COVAB). They include poultry industry and business, dairy industry and business, feed industry and business, pig industry and business, leather industry and business, bee industry and business and meat industry and business.

Others are laboratory science education and industry, and wildlife animal industry and business. The courses are offered at both degree and diploma level. Pet and recreational industry and business is offered only at diploma level.

The courses at COVAB are aimed at skilling Ugandans to add value to their agricultural products and effectively run agribusinesses. The fees structure for the new courses is yet to be approved by the university, according to Ssentongo.

Meanwhile, students can now apply online to be considered for admission to under the private sponsorship scheme at Makerere University. The academic registrar, Alfred Masikye Namoah, said the online application system was reserved for applicants who sat Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education examinations.

Applicants have to visit the Makerere University website ( http://application. mak.ac.ug/eisweb ), where they will find a five-page application form. Once a student has filled the form, he or she is advised to click on the ‘Save a pplication’ button. “The last step is Save application.

Thereafter, a ten- digit number will be generated, which you will fill on the bank slips provide by the banks. Print the slips generated for future reference,” Masikye explained in a statement.

Thereafter, applicants pay the sh50,000 application fees at bank. The closing date for submitting the ap - plication forms and online applications is Friday June 20
