Panic as Kalangala ferry stalls on Lake Victoria

Over 100 passengers aboard a ferry on Lake Victoria were thrown into panic when the vessel stalled for nearly an hour on Friday.

The ferry was plying from Bukakata to Kalangala when its propellers got entangled with fishnets.

The water vessel was also carrying cargo that included cars and merchandise.

James Apora, the commander of the Police Marine Unit told New Vision that a diver was dispatched to disentangle the propellers.

“The incident was temporary and operations returned within minutes after the nets were removed,” Apora said, although he declined to give more details about the incident.

Eye witnesses blamed such incidents on increasing pressure from fishing activities on Lake Victoria that are driving fishermen into restricted areas.
