Makerere university has partnered with AH Consulting and International Human Resources Development Corporation ,a Boston-based international oil and gas training partner to provide students pursuing the Master of Science in Petroleum Geosciences with the state-of the-art International Petroleum Industry Multimedia System.

The system, valued at almost sh1bn, is an interactive multimedia and leading e-Learning system for building competencies in upstream petroleum technology.

IPIMS, which is licensed to over 70 companies worldwide including BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, ConocoPhillips, Petronas among others covers four key areas – petroleum geology, petroleum geophysics, petroleum engineering and formation evaluation.

Under the agreement, students on the post-graduate program will have full and free access to IPIMS licenses as a contribution by AH Consulting and IHRDC on condition that the participating students fully cover the agreed learning program and pass the module assessments.

Cuthbert Kagabo, a Director of AH Consulting when asked about the development, said, “We are pleased to enter this key partnership with Makerere University and to work with the College of Natural Sciences to strengthen their efforts to promote Oil and Gas study and research in Uganda”.

He added, “students will have access to more than 800 world class courses in 133 background learning and 87 action learning areas while the lecturers will use the system’s advanced reporting tool to monitor each student’s progress and performance and guide the students’ study.”

Dr. Michael Owor, the acting head, Department of Geology & Petroleum Studies who represented the University during the contract handover ceremony said, “This is a unique opportunity for Makerere University as the skills our students will get will enable us make them industry ready. We hope to extend IPIMS to undergraduate programs soon and to any future oil and gas programmes.”

Dr. Owor also noted that “The College of Natural Sciences is pleased to partner with AH Consulting and IHRDC and will continue comprehensive collaboration with the petroleum industry to ensure that our students are given education that rhymes with industry demands.”

Currently, Makerere University offers a Bachelor of Science program in Petroleum Geosciences and Production and a Masters of Science in Petroleum Geosciences under the Department of Geology and Petroleum Studies, in the College of Natural Sciences.
