Ten Ugandan children aged between 6 months and 15 years have secured financial support to undergo heart surgery at the Uganda Heart Institute in Mulago national referral hospital this month.

The children mainly from disadvantaged families across the country will undergo open and closed heart surgeries sponsored by a Korean based charity programme set by Sung-Hwan Kim, Chairman of Hwan Sung Group of companies.

The surgery that will cost shs60m according to the organisation takes the number of beneficiaries of the sponsorship to 130 patients since its inception in 2007.

Patients in need apply for support through the charity’s offices set up at the business arm of Hwan Sung Industries, in Kampala.
Some the earlier patients were taken for treatment surgeries in Kenya and South Korea plus training surgeons from Mulago Hospital in South Korea to acquire skills to handle complicated cases.

The beneficiaries include Josephine Katali, Hushira Nambooze, Jasper Opio, Teopista Namwanje, and Jordan Tulibasika for open surgeries.

Patients for closed surgeries include Rashida Namutebi, Shalue Nakamya, shanita Nakintu, Margaret Nangobi and Jovia Wadumaga.

“I’m happy to see the technical development of the Uganda Heart Institute surgeons which allows more patients be treated in Uganda,” said Kim.

He disclosed that he plans to sponsor more 10 heart disease patients during the last quarter of this year.
