Africa Cross-Country (Sunday, 2pm)

KOLOLO ceremonial ground After almost a month of high altitude training in Bukwo, coach Gordon Ahimbisibwe believes Uganda’s Africa Cross-country team has hit the required fitness to take on the world’s best.

“The team is in perfect condition. There are also no injuries. So expect good results,” promised Ahimbisibwe as the team took a Sunday break yesterday.

The team leaves Bukwo for Kampala tomorrow.

“We must have enough time to not only recover from the journey, but also try out the course.”

Over 30 countries, amongst them giants Ethiopia and Kenya, will feature in the competition at the Kololo ceremonial ground.

Team members described the camp as very good.

“We’ve had everything except allowances,” said one runner.

Uganda Athletics Federation had by Friday not received the $360,000 (sh903m) needed to organize the competition.

President Yoweri Museveni last August offered to fund the competition but red tape within the government has delayed release of the funds.

Kenya has previously won all gold medals of the championship.
