VETERAN Gerald Aliga announced his return after beating lightweight Moses Opolot as the National Boxing Open got underway at Lugogo on Monday.
Aliga, who last featured for the national team in 2006, proved bet¬ter as he kept his opponent on the back foot throughout the contest.
Aliga is one of the former national boxers returning to action after five years. Following the victory, Aliga vowed that he would march all the way to the final.
“This is my year. I am determined to beat these young men because this time I want to be number one. I am focused. I need to make it,” vowed Aliga, 35, who was the national team’s second choice lightweight 2006.
The week-long championship, which will help to shape Uganda’s team for the Commonwealth Games, has drawn 151 boxers from 28 clubs.
