Jackson Kiprop's condition stabilises

MARATHON runner Jackson Kiprop is in stable condition after being rushed to Mulago Hospital and being diagnosed for a serious kidney failure. 

Kiprop, who was Uganda’s best performer in the New York Marathon where he finished in sixth position and is the Mumbai Marathon reigning champion, was diagnosed with Kidney failure.

According to the hospital’s spokesperson Enock Kusasira, the doctors attending to him suspect that Kiprop took a herb some weeks ago that could be the source of his condition.

“They are now doing more tests to see whether he can be put on a dialysis machine or not. We advise people to take herbs with caution as others have an impact to their internal system,” said Kusasira.

Kiprop was rushed to Mulago Hospital on Sunday by fellow training partner, World and Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich, after he developed some breathing complications during their training in Kapkoros, Kenya. 

He was transported to Kampala together with his wife Irene, who is caring for him.

“He is at least okay. He can now eat though through the tube,” said Irene.

According to his manager Godfrey Nuwagaba, they were driven in Mulago on Sunday night and admitted in a private room with severe fever and he had suffered seizures.

Kiprop has been helping Kiprotich train for the Virgin London Marathon, which is due in April.

He was his training partner ahead of the Moscow IAAF World Championships last year and led for the biggest part of the race, before falling off in the final stages.
