Makerere University has won a grant worth over $30m (about sh74b) to implement 12 projects on agriculture and sustainable natural resource management.

This was revealed Wednesday during the signing of a memorandum of understating between coordinators of the projects and Makerere University and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) at the University’s School of Food Technology, Nutrition and Bio-engineering.

Makerere University won the grant after competing in the Capacity Building in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED) scheme whose goal is promoting sustainable economic, social, and environmental development in low and middle income countries.

The University developed and submitted concepts and proposals in a two stage competitive framework and scooped the highest number of research projects. It got 12; 9 as the lead institution and three as a collaborating institution.

Under the program, Makerere will also strengthen capacity in the other three higher institutions of learning it is partnering with to contribute to a more and better qualified work force, increased knowledge and evidence based policy and decision making.

The three universities partnering with Makerere are the Universities of Juba, Addis Ababa, and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

The Norwegian Ambassador to Uganda Thorbjorn Gaustadsaether applauded Makerere saying the university was on the right foot regarding research innovations, but challenged the researchers to come up with research that impacts society and local communities.
