EU gives 200 scholarships

MAKERERE University is offering scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year, starting in August.

Maria Roselynn Muzaaki, the spokesperson for the College of Computing and Information Sciences, which is coordinating the scholarships, said the offer is open to all Ugandans, though it will have a bias towards people from disadvantaged communities.

“The scholarships will cover tuition, a monthly subsistence allowance, travel ticket, health and repatriation insurance, among others,” she said.

The priority areas of study are engineering, information and communication technology (ICT), environment, sciences, management, agriculture and social sciences.

Sponsorship for masters and doctorate programmes is available at Makerere and 21 other institutions of higher learning around the world that have jointly won the grant of about sh13b from the European Commission.

The institutions include Ghent University in Belgium, Aalborg University in Denmark, Université de Nantes in France and Universidade de Lisboa in Portugal. Those in Africa include the University of Ghana Business School, National University of Samoa, Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania and Moi University in Kenya

“This is a great opportunity for Ugandans to access free quality education. We urge all those interested to apply immediately,” said Muzaaki.

“The scholarships are aimed at providing quality education to brilliant and disadvantaged people who cannot afford higher education.”

The international scholarship project, dubbed Cooperation with ACP (The African, Caribbean and Pacific) Group of States, countries in Regional and International Bridging of Universities (CARIBU), is coordinated by the Vrije Universiteit, Brussel in Belgium.

Under the projects, Ugandans can apply to study in other participating universities around the globe.

Participating institutions, are expected to meet the needs of the involved countries by supporting the development of disadvantaged regions, in addition to promoting equal opportunity and gender balance.
